Allergy Season

Have you been dealing with a runny nose, itchy eyes, sinus pressure headache, coughing, and sore throat? You might have allergies.
In Newnan, Georgia, we are experiencing a strong seasonal surge in weed pollen such as ragweed, and airborne mold spores from decaying vegetation. All of this leads to an uptick in allergies.
When someone has allergies, it can swell the mucus membranes in the sinus passages causing nasal congestion. This can result in the trapped mucus and create a breeding ground for secondary sinus infections. They govern the Qi or energy of the body.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Autumn is the season for lungs. The lungs and respiratory system love moisture and hate dryness. Autumn dryness heavily influences the lungs and respiratory tract. The lungs are the "delicate" organ in Chinese Medicine. They govern the Qi, or energy, of the body and respiration. It is closely tied in with the skin and immune system.
Pungent flavors nourish the lungs. Foods such as Asian pears, white potatoes, garlic, ginger, millet, black bean soup, cooked vegetables, soup, and greens are beneficial. Avoid cold and raw foods and drinks. These protect and nourish the lung Yin.
To nourish the lungs, bedtime should be between 9:00 PM and 9:30 PM. Nasal wash is helpful, 1/2 teaspoon of salt to 1 cup of distilled water. Steamed shower to loosen the mucus in the sinus membrane, helps the natural production of mucus in the sinus passages, which have antibacterial properties and help to flush out the bacteria.
Herbs to dry sinus are nettles, butterbar, mullein for cough and ears, echinacea, and elderberry are natural antibacterial and antiviral.
